The Boy Scouts of America have released their 2012 Communications Plan which highlights some cool new features and initiatives for the new year.
First, is the release of news regarding three new Merit Badges: Gaming, Kayaking and Search and Rescue! These badges are intended to help introduce scouts to the topic areas and to learn more about each topic. The Merit Badge requirements for each of the badges will be coming out in the next few months so keep your eye out for them!
Second, 2012 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Eagle Award! To honor the special occasion, the BSA has released information about a special 2012 Centennial Eagle Scout patch, for scouts who receive the Eagle Award in this extra special year for Eagle Scouts. All Life scouts close to Eagle should take advantage of this opportunity to be among the ones who will receive this extra special patch.
The third new initiative is the relaunch of
scouting.org which will occur sometime this Spring. The remodel will make it easier for new/interested members to learn more about scouting and how to get involved with a Pack, Troop or Venture unit near them. It is also an attempt to streamline information and make it easier for existing scouters to use.
Finally, additional focus will be placed on awareness of the 2012 National Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Scout Reserve, healthy practices (the launch of the SCOUTstrong fitness program which encourages healthy eating and exercise for all of scouting's members. Along with an increased focus on STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics learning. Like always, the BSA will also be focusing on gaining and keeping membership. They have launched the new 2012 National Membership Campaign which focuses not on getting a badge, but the lifetime memories that are behind each and every patch. Below is an example of this campaign.
